Fort Ord Reuse Authority Receives Grant to Conduct Veterans Cemetery Planning

Marina, California

The Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA) announced a $460,000 grant award from the Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) to conduct Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Infrastructure Planning. What began as a small community-based movement to establish a veterans cemetery in 1991, shortly after the Department of Defense’s decision to close Fort Ord, has sustained regional support for nearly two decades. This grant renews essential planning, helps the cemetery effort gain traction and community support, and coordinates efforts by local, state, and national government. The future Veterans Cemetery site is located on City of Seaside and County of Monterey former Fort Ord land.

FORA Chair/Seaside Mayor Ralph Rubio stated: “I think I speak for all of our local elected officials when I say that this grant is a critical step along the path to creating a cemetery to honor our service members.” The grant would allow FORA to issue a Request for Proposals for consultants to compete for a contract that would accomplish aerial and topographical mapping, roadway mapping, infrastructure reports, and implementation planning for the Veterans Cemetery over the next year.

Project manager Jonathan Garcia, Senior Planner at FORA, said: “This grant was possible because local governments collectively funded Cemetery Master Planning in 2007 and 2008, allowing FORA to meet OEA’s 10% local match requirement for the grant.”
